The original campus plans for the University of Florida at Gainesville were developed by the firm of Edwards & Walter. The General College at the University of Florida was created in 1935 to provide a standard core curriculum for freshmen and sophomores. Matriculation from the General College was required before students could enter an upper division college. The name was changed to University College in 1945.
